A SAVAGE ELEPHANT.

ATTACK UPON KEEPER.

A young bull elephant ran amok at the depot of Mr. G. • Bruce Chapman, in London.

The animal, with two larger elephants, had just arrived at its stable from the docks, when it became infuriated, and-, picking up an Indian mahout with its trunk, threw him on the floor, afterwards ripping open his leg with a tusk. Three other Indians ran tc> the rescue of their comrade, but the elephant charged them and succeeded in pinning one against the wall, where it prodded him in the ribs, fortunately without causing serious injury.

A keeper, J. Card, who endeavoured to secure the enraged animal, was knocked down and, by rolling over just as the elephant was falling on its knees to crush him—in the manner characteristic of its kind—had a very narrow escape from death.

Leaping to his feet, the man vaulted over a partition and subsequently joined the mahouts in pacifying and restraining the savage animal.
