AN ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME. THE RACES AT ELLERSLIE. PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET. Holiday-makers in Auckland have been exceedingly fortunate this season in having perfect weather. New Year's Day is always counted a great clay for excursions and outings. In this respect it is even greater than Boxing Day. Tho beaches and harbour trips are sure to draw largo quotas. In the programme of attractions, the continuation of tho Auckland Racing Club's Summer meeting holds pride of | place. Tho grounds at Ellcrslie aro a j perfect picture. j Cricket should attract a largo crowd to Eden Park, where the Auckland representatives will meet Otago in tho first Plnnket Shield match to be played here this season. Otago are tho holders of the trophy, and although their team this year is not as strong as last year's eleven, yet it should givo a good account of itself. Auckland has a strong eleven and a good game should be witnessed. Club tournaments on New Year's Day will see a largo number of bowlers on the greens. ROTORUA RESORT CROWDED THE SIMPLE LIFE POPULAR. MOTOR SERVICES VERY BUSY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ROTORUA. Wednesday. Hugo crowds of tourists continue to arrive in Rotorua by car. Perfect weather prevails, and the, camping ground is a thickly-populated spot. There are fully 100 camps. A* feature of the holiday season is the number of women and families camping out. Those whom the boarding houses cannot accommodate aro taking to the simple life with zest. Pohutu preserves a Christmas spirit, and has played each day without fail for weeks. All the motor services are working to capacity, arid several have more business than they can undertake. Owing to the heat bathing in the lake commences at 5 a.m., and continues until late at night. It is a popular pastime.
