MOTORING ACCIDENTS.

REMARKABLE ESCAPE. SEDAN FALLS OFF ROAD. MISFORTUNE OF THAMES PARTY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NELSON, Wednesday. Farther details of the motor accident on the Murchison road at Kawatiri show that the party concerned lied a miraculous escape. The tourists, v. ho came from Thames, consisted of Mr. W. Judd,. a well known ironfounder, Mrs. Judd, Mr. Allan Judd (son), Miss Judd (daughter), and Mr. Leslie Judd, a cousin. The car was a five seater Sedan, and the party had motored through from Picton on the previous day, continuing their journey on Monday with Dunedin as their ultimate destination, Mr. Judd was driving. While proceeding along the Kawatiri road a large motor-lorry owned by Messrs. B. I. Spiers and Son, of Murchison, was met when rounding a corner. The driver of the car, who had the outside mnning, considered there was room to pass, and when just about clear the edge of the road gave way. The car turned over twice before being brought up by a tree stump, which fortunately prevented the vehicle from falling about a further 30lt. The shock of the impact threw the occupants out through the top of the hood and it was a miraculous circumstance that so little injury was sustained by the travellers. Mrs. Judd, who is a daughter of Mrs. J. Savage, of Bronte Street, Nelson, received severe facial injuries, including a broken nose. Miss Judd's injuries consisted of a gash ou one of her legs. Mr. W. Judd escaped with bruises and shock, while the other two occupants of the vehicle got off scathless. Mrs. and Miss Judd were subsequently admitted to the Public Hospital. Willing assistance was available soon after the occurrence. Dr. Fogg, of Murchison, was sent for, and later accompanied Mrs. and Miss Judd to the hospital. The chief damage to the car was to the hood, the top of which was torn off, j and to the back portion of the vehicle where it struck the stump. The strong framework of the hood undoubtedly saved the occupants from more serious injury, as it broke 'the fall considerably. Strange to say, only the glass doors on one side were broken, while the wind screen did i not receive a scratch. The engine was j not damaged, and after the car had been brought to the roadside again with the assistance of block and tackle and the lorry, it was driven into town by Mr. A. Judd. Miss Judd was discharged from the hos- j pital to-day, but Mrs. Judd is still at j the institution. COLLISION IN WAULATO. A SMALL CAR OVERTURNED.
