NEW THAMES HARBOUR.
DEFINITE STEP TAKEN. CONTRACT FOR FIRST WALL. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES. Wednesday. A definite step has been taken in connection with tho new Thames harbour, a contract having been let for tho construction of the shoreward wall. The harbour scheme as a whole is expected to cost about £60,000. It provides for the erection of four rubble walls in the shape of a slanting square enclosing 114 acres, with a 400 ft. entrance for shipping. A channel will be dredged through this entrance to take shipping up to the wharf, where a swinging basin will be provided to allow tho vessels to turn. The assembling of dredging machinery is proceeding and tho dredge will soon be working from a large punt launched last month. The tender just let will dispose of the erection of that portion of the walling which will be visible at high tide. The remaining three walls will be visible at three-quarter and half-tide. The shoreward wall, the successful tenderer for which was Mr. 11. Hunt, of Auckland, at £5825, will be 2500 ft. in length. The contract covers the supply of 25,000yd5. of general rubble and between 4000 yds. and 5000 yds. of picked stone. Tho highest tender was in the vicinity of £IO,OOO.
