RUBBISH DESTRUCTOR.
SCHEME FOR NORTH SHORE. POSITION OF TAKAPUNA. A proposal for the provision of a rubbish destructor in Takapuna for the use of the four marine boroughs has been under consideration. At last night s meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council a joint report was received from the engineers of Devonport, Takapuna and Northcote, recommending that a destructor be provided at- Puriri Street., which is near the Northcoto boundary. The cost of installation was estimated at £3200, and the cost of maintenance at £660 a year. A discussion as to the advisability of allowing the neighbouring boroughs to carry their garbage through Takapuna to the incinerator, ami whether the borough should not rather provide on its own account for the disposal of its garbage. The borough engineer, on being asked for his opinion, said the movement had arisen from representations by the Health Department that the present provision for garbage disposal in the four boroughs was unsatisfactory. The engineers had found that the boroughs . could not economically deal with their garbage separately. Provision for a joint destructor would bo the cheapest method, and it was hoped the matter would be considered at a conference of representatives of the four boroughs. The question was eventually remitted to the engineer for a detailed report as to how the scheme would affect Takapuna Borough in particular.
