SPRING-CLEANING HINTS.
When worm holes are noted in furniture, make a paste of methylated spirits and sulphur, and, if the wood is mahogany, use red ochre —for oak a mixture of red and yellow ochre to get the right shade—and apply at once .before the damage becomes extensive. To remove white marks, wring a cloth in spirit of naphtha, and polish the stained part vigorously with this. A wash with weak vinegar and water (one tablespoonful of vinegar to a bucket of water), removes the stain from polished furniture which has been much finger-marked. Methylated spirits is an excellent polishing medium for plate-glass and for mirrors, but care must be taken not to touch the surrounding woodwork. A tablespoonful of paraffin in water is the best of all " tonics " for gilt picture frames, which can afterward be polished with furniture polish.
