KIWITAHI RIDING ROADS.
INTERESTS OF RATEPAYERS. SUGGESTIONS TO COUNCIL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MORRLNSVILLE Monday. There was an exceptionally good attendance at the annual meeting of the Kiwitahi Ratepayers' Association, practically every member .attending. The president, Mr. A. T. Walker, was in the chair, and the riding member, Mr. W. 11. Lowry, and the county engineer, Mr. W. G. Gibbs, attended. At the commencement of the meeting several members' expressed a certain amount of dissatisfaction with various methods adopted, the chief -bone of contention appearing to bo the use of heavy lorries on the roads and the acceptance of large-sized metal. After the riding member and engineer had answered several questions and explained the methods adopted the members appeared to be satisfied. The engineer, in dealing with the use of heavy lorries, said that for carting for a distance of over five miles small trucks could not compete with large ones. Regarding the good roads truck the steel wheels were 20in. wide, and had the same action as a road roller, but in a more concentrated form. Hie greatest part of the rolling by a road roller was by the rear wheels, and not by the fore roller. This truck had laid down a mile of road in the county in the middle of winter, on a road with very soft foundations, and on which other trucks could not travel. There would be ample money in the Kiwi-' tah; loans to shingle the roads and finish them properly. A resolution was carried that the County Council endeavour to have all metal produced strict!v in accordance with the contract, 21, in., "and that if it were departed from the council take a determined stand to enforce the contract. A resolution was also carried that the Ratepayers' Association viewed with alarm the damage done to the roads, especially new roads, by the heavy motor vehicles, and that the council use its very best endeavours to get them off the roads. The council was asked not to let contracts to those using heavy trucks, and 1 -to restrict speed. The following 1 officers were elected President, Mr. A. T. Walker; secretary, Mr. T>. S. T'irrit, committee. Messrs. IT. S. Miller, Tf. Chepmell, G. 11. Pirrit, J. Wake and D. Jones.
