[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL BEPOKTEH. J DUNEMN, Monday.
A large party of bluejackets and petty officers from 11.M.5. Dunedin are at work upon an exhibition display on behalf of the New Zealand Division of the Koyal Navy. An unenclosed space well lighted is being used and a splendid effect lias been obtained. The exhibits will include an inflated diving dress, the eyes of which will be illuminated. This should arrest attention.
Exact models of' present, day ships, as F.cen at 10,000 yards, have been made and will be "floated" upon a canvas sea lighted by searchlights and other devices which should give a highly realistic impression. The fleet includes the Hood, Elizabeth and the Dunedin herself. Overlooking this sea. will be a lighted model of the lighthouse on Cantiek Head, Cromarty, one of the naval bases in the war.
There are guns of various kinds mounted and already wearing the navy's own polish.
Interesting exhibits are the. steering wheels of the battleship New Zealand, the actual wheel bearing the Maori motto, which steered her into action in the North Sea, and a huge old-fashioned wheel' which steered. H.M.S. Philomel when she helped to convoy the main body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
A semaphore signalling apparatus has (been erected and the children will be lible to make the light af its top wink fy pressing a button. They also . will be able to perform imaginary jour/ieys by manipulating the regulation bh'dgo telegraphy to the engine room of a mighty ship. I here is a fourteen-inch torpedo of the type used at the Dardanelles and the head of a 21in. torpedo; also a paravane, the device used extensively for cutting the moorings of mines, and two mines, one of the contact tvpe exploding by percussion, and the other of the type fired electrically from the land. A small turbine will be on view enabling people to see how the steam acts upon the blades and an exhibit of naval ammunition showing the shell in each stage of its manufacture, besides many ot'ier odd.s and ends.
The Navy, it need hardly be said, will be ready wiiti its show by opening day. All the models were made by the company of H.M.S. Duuedin.
