MR. FOWLDS' COLLECTION,

GIFT TO THE UNIVERSITY.

VALUABLE LIBRARY ADDITION*

A notable collection of books on New Zealand 'has been presented to the Auckland University College by the president, the Hon. George Fovvlds. At yesterday's meeting of the College Council a letter was read from Mr. Fowlis stating that as he had lately removed to a smaller residence, where there is not room for his whole library, and as it had long been his intention that ultimately .his whole collection should be handed to the college, the change of household arrangements had led him to present the major portion ofMhe books at once. The gift included some rare New Zealand books. Possibly there would be duplication of books in the collection presented by the late Mr. Alfred Kidd. On this point he wished the council to feel free to exchange, under competent advice, any of the books in his collection for other New Zealand books not in either collection, or to sell duplicate copies in order to purchase other New Zealand booiis. Mr. Marsden Caughev, in moving that the council place on record its appreciation of the president's gift, remarked that its present value would probably be over £IOOO. Mr. S. I. Crook2s', who seconded the motion, said that future generations would value the collection even more highly than people of to-day. Mr. T. U. Wells suggested that, if possible, the collection should be placed in a bay by itself in the new college building. Mr. Fowlds said that while he .'had for a long time intended that the college should be the ultimate destination of his whole collection, the recent change in his domestic arrangements had led him to pack up the present portion earlier than he had originally planned. He could not even state the number of volumes he had sent in. The motion was agreed to.
