THE GROWING OF APPLES.
SMALL MARGIN OF PROFIT [EY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] KOKAHO, Monday. The prices received by the Port Albert fruitgrowers this , season for their Dougherty apples have been most disappointing, and unless prices are on a more payable basis next season it is highly probable that more orchards will be cut out and the land used for dairying. The average gross price on the Auckland markets for first-class Dougherty apples from the cool stores has been about 7s. From this has to be deducted commission, fiijd; insurance, id; advertising, Id; cool storage, .2s 3d; cartage and handling charges in Auckland, 4d: railway freight, 4d; cartage to station, 4d; case and wrapping paper, Is Id; total expenses, ss. This leaves the grower only 2s for his labour and outlay in growing, spraying, picking and packing.
