THE TEMPERANCE PRINCIPLE.
SUPPORT FOR THE ALLIANCE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Monday. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to-day adopted the report of the Church property trustees, also that of the Supply and Appointments Committee. The report on the unification of regulation regarding the charges was adopted. Considerable discussion took plnco on the right of call, the proposal of the report being adopted after many opinions had been expressed. Deputations were received from all denominations in the city, and welcomes wero extended. Members of the New Zealand Alliance were also present, addressed the house and received an enthusiastic promise of support and sympathy. Mr. D. Calder, the representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society, was also received.
In a discussion on the Temperance Committee's report emphasis was laid on tho need for education of the young on the temperance principle and determination was expressed to carry on the fight. A deliverance adopted urged upon the Government a necessity to introduce into the schools scientific instruction concerning tho effect of alcohol and urged that in view of Legislation to he introduced in the near future their people should impress on members of Parliament a need for " a two-issue " ballot paper or preferential voting.
