RACING.

WAIKATO SPRING MEETING

THE OPENING DAY.

SPOONY WINS THE CUP.

The Waikato Racing Club's Spring Meeting w&s opened at Te Rapa on Saturday. The weather was boisterous, and one or two light showers fell, but despite this there was a large attendance, which included many visitors. With the exception of the Clarkin Steeplechase all the events drew good fields, and patrons were provided with some keen racing and excellent sport. The Waikato Cup attracted 12 runners, who provided a splendid cor ('est. Victory went to Mr. F. Earl's gelding Spoony, who was always handy, and took charge at the foot of the straight to win narrowly from Polonett. The latter and the third horse, Gab Day, were both a little unlucky at different stages of the race, and may both win soon.

There was a sensational incident during the running of the Cambridge Handicap. A Maori spectator walked across the course just as the horses were rounding the bend and was knocked down bv Arch Amie, who was brought down by the collision. Fortunately, neither the Maori nor W. H. Jones, ruler of Arch Amie, was injured, though the former received a shaking and was conveyed to the casualty room. There were a couple of other mishaps during the day. H. Dulicu received a cut on the leg with a spur while riding in the Trial Handicap and had to forego further riding engagements, and R. L. Thomson received a cut under one of his eyes when Pittsworth fell with him in the Clarkin Steeplechase. Speculation was brisk and the totalisator handled £34.296, compared with £31,099 10s on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £3196 IDs. Results are as follow :—• DETAILS OF THE RACCING. BY ARCHER. Racing will commence with the Frankton Handieaj), for which Sulia, who ran second on Saturday, may be favourite. Others that may find good support are Pegaway and Nippy. There are eight acceptors for the Matangi Hurdles. Pendennis is improving and scored so decisively on Saturday that he should again be in keen demand, while West Abbey and Chirrup will also have friends. Tea Time and Flying Juliet will probably dispute favouritism in the Ruakura Stakes and should again finish close together. A good field of 15 is carded for the Hamilton Handicap, and they should provide an interesting contest. Gala Day, Gold Jacket and Ruapapa are a trio whose recent form should cause them to figure prominently in the betting. Pinon and Billikms. both of whom won on the first day, should be in good demand for tho Taupiri Hack Handicap, while King Pot may also find solid support. Eight well-known cross country performers are carded for the Waikato Steepleehaso ond the popular fancies may be Tuki, Peter Amans and Pittsworth. A useful field of sprinters will be seen in action in the Kirikiriroa Handicap. On their form on Saturday Master O'Rorke and The Lamb should lie well fancied, while Archeen mav also be in strong demand. The meeting will conclude with the Tauwhare Hack Handicap, and the favourite may come from Ring Potoa, Arch Opal and King Smock.
