NEW AWARD FOR MINERS. INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Oct. 24. The Coal Tribunal has made a new award for miners throughout the Commonwealth. It refused a demand for a minimum wage of £5 10s a week and also rejected a claim for a reduction in the working hours. The Court awarded an increase of Is 6d a day to miners who are in receipt of the present daily minimum rate. The conference of the Federal Council of the Coalminers' Federation has decided to link-up with the International Miners' Federation, of which Mr. Frank Hodges is the British president. The object is to secure international action should circumstances require it.
FORTY-FOUR HOUR WEEK
WEST AUSTRALIAN BILL. A. and N.2i. PERTH. Oct. 24. The Minister for Labour, Mr. A. McCallum, moved in the Legislative Assembly the second reading of a bill to provide for a 44 hour week in all industries. He said it would apply to agricultural workers by the spread of 88 hours work over a fortnight. The Court would have power to prohibit overtime being worked in any industry if it thought there was such unemployment as would warrant, it being prohibited.
