LARGE HOUSE BURNED.
DAMAGE AT MOUNT EDEN. EARLY MORNING OUTBREAK. A four teen-roomed house in King's Avenue, Mount Eden, was badly damaged by fire in the early hours of yesterday morning. The owner, Mrs. A. H. Abbott, occupied' the western wing, with her two brothers, Messrs. C. P. and N. Marshall, and the south wing was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Elliott. Mrs. Elliott was awakened by a noise in the sitting room, and on investigation found the roof blazing. She aroused her husband, who, in turn gave the alarm lo the other occupants of the house. By this time the south wing was enveloped in dense smoke, and all attempts to reach the telephone failed. Whila efforts were made to stem the progress of the fire a neighbour was roused, and he summoned the Mount Eden Fire Brigade, shortly after two o'clock. In spite of a good water pressure it was found impossible to save the building. A considerable amount of new furniture recently placed in the building bv Mrs. Abbott was not insured, neither was the property of her two brothers. In fact all the occupants were hewy losers. The house was insured for £2OOO in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £SOO and £3OO in the same office policies on furniture and effects were held by Mrs. Elliott and Mrs. Abbott.
