COUNTERFEIT COINS.

LARGE NUMBER SEIZED, INGENIOUS HIDING PLACE. Detectives who, for over a week past, had been making investigations following cd the recent arrest of a man on » charge of having ccrunterfeil coins in his possession, made an arrest in Sydney on the night of September 25. After watching him for some time Detectives Qoinn, Almond, G&rlick, and James, accosted a man in the street, and as they approached him a woman was seen to slip in among the catrwd of Friday night shoppers. The maa was taken to the police station and detained while the detectives visited a house at Redfern. The house •was thoroughly searched. Every conceivable potential hiding place was over- ■ hauled, and eventually 37 counterfeit florins were unearthed from an obscure receptable at the rear of the premises. Upon this discovery being made the man was charged with having been in the possession of the coins. In the meantime a search had been made for the young woman who was observed to hurry into the crowd at the approach of the detectives. Not long after the apprehension of the man a young woman was questioned and searched and 50 counterfeit florins were found secreted in the lining of a fur stole, which she wore thrown over her shoulders. She, also, was charged with being in the possession of counterfeit coins. The florins were an excellent reproduction of the genuine. They rang when dropped without the dead, lead-like quality of many counterfeits, but they were slightly "lighter than a genuine coin.
