BRITAIN AND EGYPT.
THE EMPIRE S SPINAL CORD. IMPORTANCE OF SUEZ CANAL. LONDON, Sept 80. Sir George Lloyd was entertained at luncheon by the Royal Colonial Institute before his departure to Egypt, where he is to succeed Lord Allcnby as High Commissioner. It was declared by Sir George that throughout the Empire people were interested in- Egypt, because it was recognised that the Suez Canal was the very spinal cord connecting some of the mo§t important parts of the Empire. Sir George said that he woald endeavour to show the Egyptians that their natural and legitimate aspirations for wider rights of self-government could ba achieved only by recognising that Britain was Egypt's best friend and wisest and stoutest counsellor.
