IMMIGRATION SYSTEM.
THE CLAIMS OF INDUSTRY.; PROPOSED ASSOCIATION. . SUPPORT AT CHRISTCHURCH. f [By TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] i CBRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. That reforms are needed in the present y immigration system was the general opinion voiced at a meeting of the counj cil of the Canterbury Chamber of Come merce. Mr. E. H. Wylee read a lengthy u report on the conference held at Wellinge ton last month. He urged the formation - of a Dominion Settlement Association i and thought the chamber should recoge nise the interest the Wellington chamber - had taken in immigration and assist and co-operate with it as far as possible. It e seemed to him that the subject was one r for the appointment by the Government v of a permanent immigration commission, 6 as was urged at the conference of the s associated chambers, and to which he t was satisfied those engaged in industry p and in trade and commerce would will- . ingiy give their support and co-operation. He hoped the proceedings at the Wellington chamber wouid bear good fruit, and would instil into the mind of the ? Government the urgent necessity of | j'.akmg the matter thoroughly in hand, a-i id with determination to carry oat ths na ?essary investigations on sound and hut inesslike lines, and that a well-con-sida red and progressive policy in regard to \% emigration would be adopted. Ml. W. Machin said he was sure the Exhibition would assist immigration'- He referred to the many rumours current concerning the management of immigration affairs. There must be some truth in the rumours that there were inadequate means of receiving immigrants. There were good openings for experienced men 3nd women in various trades, but ' we wanted! the right immigrants. There ; were many positions that were starving ■ for the right men. ! It was decided to support the formation ; 0 { an association and to call a meeting • of those interested.
