FRACAS IN RESTAURANT. STRUGGLE AGAINST ARREST. "KEEP AWAY FROM DRINK." A fracas in a Queen Street restaurant on Saturday evening resulted in a middle-aged man, whose name was suppressed, pleading ;uilty in the Police Court yesterday to being drunk in Queen Street, resisting Constable Allen, and wilfully damaging crockery valued at 7s 3d. Senior-Sergeant Edwards said that accused and another man commenced fighting in the restaurant. When a constable was called in accused resisted violently, enabling his antagonist to get away. Mr. A. Moody said accused had four young children and held a responsible position. This was his first appearance in Court and drink was undoubtedly his. trouble. The magistrate, Mr. Poynton, ordered accused to come np for sentence within 12 months for resisting arrest. On the other charges accused was convicted and ordered to pay costs. " You must keep away from drink," commented Mr. Poynton. STOLE FROM A FRIEND. " This is a mean theft," said the magistrate, in sentencing Norton Benjamin Attewell, aged 22, to three months' imprisonment, for stealing £7 15s, the property of Hiram Nixon. In a statement made to Detective O'Sullivan, accused said he met Nixon last Friday and told him he had no money. Nixon took him to his home in Grey Street and while he was asleep on Saturday afternoon accused took a purse containing the money. Chief-Detective Cummings said accused had been three weeks in Auckland. Nixon was a labourer and was charitably inclined. DAMAGE TO TAXI. Charges of being drunk in Broadway, Newmarket, wilfully damaging the d_Q.or of a taxi to the extent of 10s, and failing to comply with the terms of probation were admitted by Henry Arthur Esdale, aged 21. Senior-Sergeant Edwards, said accused was arrested for drunkenness on Saturday afternoon, and on his way to the police station [lulled the hinge off the door of a taxi Mr. W. J. Campbell, probation officer, said accused was placed on probation for two years on June 6 on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond. He had not reported himself for two months. Esdale, who asked for another chance, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months, for breach of probation. He was also ordered to take out a prohibition order, and to make restitution to tae extent of 10s. TWO CASES REMANDED. Henry Arthur Richardson was remanded until next Monday on a charge of stealing a suit of clothes valued at £lO 10s, tho property of John Phillips. Chief Detective Cummings said further charges were pending. A charge of stealing plough-harness, cart-harness, and ljcwt. of manure, valued at. £lO 14s, the property of Ah Hong, of West Tamaki, was denied by. a young Chinese, Ah Hoong. He was remanded for a week, bail being fixed at £SO.
