GIRL TO BE DETAINED.
INTERESTS OF COMPANIONS. NO CONVICTION ENTERED. [r»Y TELEGRAPH. —PHESS ASSOCIATION. ] DUNE.DIN. Monday. A girl, Ivy Robertson, usually known as Ivy Cunningham, 17 yearn of ago, was charged to-day with stealing, on various dates between October 10 and Janiary 30, £2 2s 6d in money, the property of William Phillip Matthews. She pleaded guilty. The evidence showed that the accused, who had been brought up by Mr. and Mrs. Matthews, was not under proper control. She had been sent to pay accounts and paid only 7s instead of 14s each time, keeping the balance and altering the receipts. Ensign Coombs said accused was the leader of a batch of girls who hung about town. She had had previous complaints about the girl, but she had always managed to keep on the right side of the law. In view of the exhibition and her influence on other girls, it. was recommended that she be sent to the Borstal Institution, where she would be under proper control. A period of reformative detention would bo the wisest course to adopt. The magistrate said ho would not convict accused unless it was absolutely necessary. In her own interests and the interests of the g ir ' s whom she associated or was likely to associate, he would order her to be detained in the Borstal Institution, Wellington, for two years. There would be no conviction; it would merely be an order for detention.
