ELECTRIC LIGHT POLES.

DRESSED OR UNDRESSED? NORTH SHORE BOROUGHS. BOARD REVERSES DECISION. The first delivery of Australian hardwood poles to the Waitemata Power Board has changed the minds of its members as to the desirability of erecting round undressed poles in the main streets of tiie North Shore boroughs. It was thought that undressed polos would be quite suitable and presentable in appear ance, but after an inspection of some of the poles recently delivered it has been deemed advisable to procure square dressed poles for certain of the principal streets. The original estimates prepared by the engineer, Mr. W. P. Gauvam, provided for square dressed poles in the mam streets of all the boroughs. This course the board considered unnecessary, and a policy was adopted whereby all poles were to be of the undressed variety. At yesterday's meeting Mr. W. R. T. Leigh ton moved that the previous resom taon stipulating the use of undressed poles be rescinded, and that, instead, dressed poles be used from Bays water Wharf along the tram route, from Belmont to the Devonport Borough boundary, from the Birkenhead Wharf via Hinomoa and Hauraki Roads to the intersection with Onewa.Road, and along Onewa Road and Queen Street to Birkenhead Wharf. Air. Leighton said he was prompted to move on these lines because a certain number of dressed poles were going to be erected in Takapuna and if other boroughs were not treated similarly there was bound to be trouble. He was not suggesting thai all the main roads should oe sup p!led with dressed poles and had therefore reduced his demands to a minimum. Mr. M. E. Thompson spoke of some of the undressed poles as being "unsightly." aad other members agreed that their ap pearance for main street purposes was not everything that might be desired. The chairman, Air. J. W. Hayden, agreed that a mistake had been made b the 6rst place m deciding solely upon undressed poles and said that uow was the time to obtain some relief. It would mean ordering about 200 dressed poles. The motion was carried. The country representative? on the board secured the passage of a motion recommending the Works Committee to select the best specimens among the undressed poles for erection in the residential portions of the country districts.
