ELEPHANT FOR ZOO.
WELLINGTON CONTROVERSY.
At a meeting of the Wellington City Council, Mr. W. J. Thompson introduced the proposed purchase of an elephant for the Zoo at a cost of £375, but for which £SOO had been provided on the estimates. It would, ha said, be a great attraction, although it would cost £5 a week. The Mayor: Would it earn that money ? Mr. Thompson: I think it would. Mr. W. H. Bennett said there would be the salary of a man to look after it. Mr. Seraple said they were proposing to spend £375 on a beast which they would shut up and torture. It would be better to put the money to some good use by giving it to a charitable institution. Mr. Meadowcrolt said, firstly for the reason that they had not the money, and, secondly, until they got better accommodation for the animals they had, he was not in favour of spending the money. Mr. Thompson suggested that the matter be referred to the reserves committee. This was carried. Mr. Semple: No. Vote it out!
