SEAMEN BEFORE COURT.
ABSENCE WITHOUT LEAVE.
FOUR ORDERED TO RETURN
Absence without leave from the steamer Devon resulted in the appearance of a qu&rtet of seamen, James Alfred Cranfield, Herbert George Fisher, Frederick Robert Shavler and George William Tant, in the Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M. All pleaded guilty. On behalf of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Mr. Haigh said the men had come ashore on Friday as another party returned to the ship. They had refused to go on board, Three others who left at the same time would be brought before the Court when they were located. Cranfield said he was determined not to work on the ship for £9 10s a month, and would prefer the alternative of prison. The magistrate ordered each oftender to return to the ship, forfeit 10s as a penalty, and pay 14s 6d costs.
