FANTASTIC RUMOUR.
LOST GERMAN COLONIES. SUGGESTED RETURN DENIED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 11.35 p.m.) GENEVA, Sept. 24. A stir was caused by the publication in the Geneva newspaper, La Suisse, of a quotation from the Belgian Socialist organ, Peuple, to the effect that, in connection with the negotiations for Germany's entry into the League of Nations there is at present being considered the 'malttcr of the return of some of her lost colonies, now under mandates. ■ The article even suggested that Britain is offering the return' 'of the Congo and the Cameroons. - The paper also quoted a statement of the Berlin correspondent of Le Petit Parisien to the effect that the Carolines are also being ..discussed : under the same category. .Sir Joseph Cook, High Commissioner for Australia, dismissed the story as complete nonsense. - Sir James Allen, High . Commissioner for New Zealand, said it was " perfect piffle." The final squelching of the fantastic tale was a complete denial in toto by members of the British Cabinet.
