NORTH ISLAND ROADS.

FORMATION AND BRIDGING. REPORT OF HIGHWAYS BOARD. The monthy report of the Main HighWays Board states that bad. weather early in August retarded the construction work in many districts. The following shows the more important work carried out during the period:— Waiwera-Mangawai.—Hoteo bridge: All the piles have nrnv been made.. Maungatapere-Kaikoho.—Awarua Gorge r/:section: Formation work has been pro- , ceeding in the Awarua Gorge, but owing to the wot weather very little ha 3 been jidone. Waimamakn-Qhaeawai.—Fifteen chains of metal and formation have been done . 011 the Waimamaku-Pakanae section. Great South Road.—Mount Wellington Road Board section: About 14 chains of concrete road have been constructed between tho northern boundary of Otahuhu Borough and the entrance to the abattoirs. Excavation between Dickson's corner and Church Street is Hearing completion. Wiri Bridge: All the piles are made; a temporary bridge has Keen erected and tho dismantling of the old structure is in hand. Great North Road. —Avondale Borough section: The concrete road is complete on this length, except two or three chains at the junction of Station Road. New Lynn section: Preparatory excavation is | in hand and: concreting will be commenced at an early date. ;• Tauranga-Matamata.— Metalling on this roiid at Upper JKaiihai is proceeding satisfactorily. The work. of. widening and ' improving the road is well in hand. ;"'Marke's deviation is now open for traffic, g Gisbome-Whakafcane, via Motu.—Con- ' struction work is about to commence on tho Waiopua Bridge. Whakaiane-Tauranga.—Thornton Bridge, which was damaged during the recent r floods, is now open for light traffic. | Glsborne-Opotiki, via the Coast.— Quarrying is being continued at-Wh&ngara ■ Island, and it is hoped shortly to commence laying tho top courae of metal on j: tho section from 12 miles to 18 miles. At Knox Quarry, about the 23 mile ; .peg, and at Manga tuna Quarry, near .Tolaga Bay, quarrying baa been vigorously .carried on in preparation for metalling programme between Whangara and Tola#.* Bay; ■ " Rotokantnkn Bridge.—A third span of this bridge has been launched, and the decking of the two spans previously » launched is in hand. Rotokautuku to- Tikitiki.—One hundred and five chains of the road formation have been completed during the period. 3xi about a month it is hoped to have the whole 12 v nriies of this section under construction. To assist" in ,tse diying out of the section of this gdready completed, -and to enable wotor vehicles to run on the clay portion as early as possible, log drags have been used very successfully. " OJabornei-Wairoa, via Morere. No new construction work has been carried out on this""section, but a road toiler and Bcarifier is at work performing major maintenance, and good results are being obtained- Preparations, for the bituminous surfacing programme tor the coming summer are now in full swing. Woodville - Palmerston North. — The •whole of t:.o formation work between Cemetery Gate and the toil bridge has been completed. Dannevlrke-Waipukuiau, via Porangahau.—On the Dahnevirke County section road widening' and caiverting is, in hand between the 6 mile a#d 7 raila peg. t ' . via Wairarapa.— TSi&uci fridge : Two piers; of this bridge have been- completed, - and substantial temporary staging has been erected. Petane-Tanpq.—On the Taupo to Hunanga.'FaUs section a road roller, grader and scarifier is operating co. maintenance • work with good results. , ; Napiw-G&borne, viaWairna.—Between Mohaka and Tutira a road, roiler, grader and Bcarifier ia' working on maintenance and reconstruction work. Kawhia to Auckland-Wellington, via Eawa.—Between. Oparau Bridge and tlie Kawhia County boundary . metalling operations have* been recommenced, and about 30 chains .have been completed. rTe Kuiti-Bulls, via Taumarnnui.—Raurimu to Waimarino tsection: Twelve chains of metalling and 15 chains of formation •were completed during the month. Auckland-Wellington, via Taranaki.— On,, the Mokaa section. 32 cnains of metal-ling-'werfl scarified, and rolled. Good 'progress has befen made with •widening .work between 36 and 37 mile and also ai.\the 46 mile peg. iNgahauranga Gorge-section; Improvement work on the first mile is in hand. 'Porjrua-Paromata: Widening work on this vaection, is practically completed, and foundation metal has b?en laid for a considerable length. Ohura Road. —On the Whangamomona Saddle 14 chains of regrading have been completed, and at the Tahora Saddle a number of curves have been improved. Xfepparton JUnction-Sawera,- via ©partake.—No construction work has b«s«n carried out during the period,-but a large eon tract for lituminous surfacing, mil e3, has been let, and work is about to commence. Taungatara Stream Bridge: The whole of the concrete work has been completed, and the construction of protective, groynes" is in hand. Rangitialau East and Watershed Highways.—During the month.27. chains of road between Junction Road and Bruce Road were reconstructed; > Wanganoi-Horopi}o.—Sixteen chains of widening have been completed.
