OFFICER RETIRING.
THE POSTAL DEPARTMENT. CONTROLLER OF ACCOUNTS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Mr. F. T. R. Johnson, controller of savinga banks and accounts, will retire on superannuation at the end of tha current month after a connection with the Post and Telegraph Department extending over a period of nearly 46 years.
Mr. Johnson joined the Telegraph Department, which was at that tiro# soparate from the Postal Department, on January 5, 1880, and after the lapse of » year resigned in order to visit England. While there he was attached to the post offije in Portsmouth for about three and a-lialf years. Tie turning to New Zealand toward the end of 18b4 he rejoined the Post and Telegraph Department at Wellington in January, 1885. In a few months he gravitated to the accounting side of ,the business, and has remained in association with that branch ever since.
During the earlier period he was attached to the district offices at Napier, Auckland and Wellington, and in 1907 was transferred to the head oflice, whero ho has filled in turn all the responsible positions in the accountants' branch until he was ultimately' promoted to tha position of controller.
