NORTHERN UNION CUP. SOUTH AUCKLAND DEFEATED. LOCAL THIRTEEN'S SUCCESS. Tho Auckland League representatives were successful in the effort to lift the Northern Union Challenge Cup from South Auckland at C'arlnw Park yesterday afternoon, the holders being beaten by 24 points to 16. Tho match was witnessed by a crowd estimated at 3000. Although the visitors got plenty of opportunities they lacked the combination necessary to turn them to account. Auckland opened up the attack with a passing movement in which alfr tho backs handled, but Littlcwood dropped a pass. Then G. Raynor cross-kicked, and two of South Auckland's forwards miss-cd a try, tho ball rolling over the dead ballline. Better luck followed tho next moveftient. Jackson made a splendid opening that carried play well 'nto Auckland's territory and Wilson passed to Finlay, who scored. Dufty missed the kick at goal. Throwing the ball about, in fine style Auckland's backs attacked strongly and j.Gardiner made a spectacular run down tho line, but Johnston got him with a I good tackle. Good work by Stevenson enabled South Auckland to clear. However, Colo fielded the ball well and started a fine movement which ended in Littlewood scoring near tho corner. Visitors Gain the Lead. Receiving the ball from Raynor Jackson beat the defence badly and whipped the ball on to Hemmingway, but Littlewood stopped the movement. The second spell opened with a fast run by the visitors' fullback, but his pass to Jackways was missed, and Davidson, gathering up the ball, ran from half-way to score between the posts. Poison converted. From a serum, Ravnor passed to Jackson, who found a weak link in the Auckland backs and raced to Herewini. but his pass to Hemmingway was forward and a chance was thrown away. With play in midfield Payne and McDonald were prominent with" good work. The latter passed to Davidson, who raced down the centre, and badly beating Johnston with a " dummy" scored between the posts. Polson again added the goal points. South Auckland's Last Try. Good play by Geison and Menzies saw Gardiner bustled and the Auckland player was penalised for obstruction.
