TWO ROUNDS ON SATURDAY,

UNIVERSITY'S GOOD FORM.

The Devonport Shield competition, under the auspices of tho Auckland Hockey Association, was continued at the Reinuera grounds on Saturday afternoon. Two rounds were played, the results being: — University, 2, beat Stanley, lj Areta, 0, drew with Somerville, 0; St. Luke's, 0, drew with Wesley, 0; St. 'Luke's, 3, beat Mount Eden, 1; University, 5, beat Wesley, 1; Somerville, 1, beat Stanley, 0. Although the grounds wero somewhat rough the standard of play was fairly high. UNIVERSITY V. STANLEY. University's forwards showed good combination and tactics against Stanley and had a considerable advantage in tne opening piay. following a good HanKmg run luompson scored trom a centring hit. University continued to press till Saunders brought relief. Miller and Chaplin improved matters with a good central attack and W. Chaplin scored an angle shot, iiodfje and burton, on University's left LiauK, made aevoial fine concerted dashes, but their ellort3 wcrro frustrated by solid defence. Stanley's spirited forward rushes were countered by sound defensivo play by Hume and Burt. A shar.p sortie by University was crowned with success, Burton running through and scoring. Somerville iiad the advantage in the opening piay against Areta, but although Lite lorwaraa aitaciied in jjood formation tncy wero unable to penetrate the Areta cieience. Hard hitting by tho Areta front lino gave them a tempoiary advantage, but Amnio and Baildon proved very sate. Somerville had somewhat the better of the general play, but their offensive movements lacked fimsa and they were unable to score, a hard game ending in a draw. SOMERVILLE V. STANLEY. Tho Somerville forwards attacked strongly from tne outset of their gamo with Stanley, and C. Watts shot over the net. Much unnecessary hard play was indulged in and neither side gained any material advantage; tho delenco on both sides proving voiy sound. 'J.ho spell ended without score. Upon resuming, Somerville made a series of hot attacks and Stanley wero kept strictly on the defensive. A tine solo eliort by C. Watts placed the Stanley goal in danger and Seccombo drove the bail into the net. Several sorties by Stanley were stopped by Roberts and Simpson, and the Somerville forwards, playing with great determinahad considerably the better of tho play. However, the Stanley defence held and Somerville wero unable to break through again, tho game ending with tho score I—o in Bomerville's favour. MOUNT EDEN V. ST. LUKE'S. Mount Eden attacked hotly and after scrambling play in St. Luke's circle Rankin goaled. St. Luke's retaliated and Hookham made a great ruii before being stopped at the circlo's edgo by Rankin. A further attack by St. Luko's saw Craig scoro with a fine shot. After a period of indecisive play _ St. Luke's mado a strong attack on the right flank and C. Potter, racing through, scored. Kelly created a nice opening for Mount Eden, but Steele intercepted cleverly and from his clearing hit St. Luko's launchod a strong counter-attack. Another St. Luko's offensive resulted in a good goal, when Williams eluded tho defence and sent in a hot shot. St. Luke's continued to dominate plav, but wero unable to add to their goal-tally, tho gamo ending: St. Luke's. 3; Mount Eden. 1. JUNIOR GRADE RESULTS.
