DAVIS CUP CONTESTS.
AUSTRALIA V. CANADA. PRELIMINARY PRACTICE GAMES. Reuter. MONTREAL, Aug. 7. The Australian Davis Cup representatives, Anderson and Taylor, have arrived in Montreal and are practising. Anderson appears to be in fine condition. Anderson and Patterson will probably play in the singles against Canada. Patterson and Hawkes ara expected to arrive for a serious trial of the torn on August 8. The Canadian team will comprise Willard Crocker, Jack Wright, E. H. la Framhoise, and Leroy Rennie. In an interview, Anderson said Franpe, and not the United States, was expected to hazard Australia's bid for the Davis Cup this year. Lacoste had shown more improvement in the past two years than any player he had seen. Lacoste's tempera' ment was much better suited to the tournament than that of any of his French team mates. He had a cool head in any emergency, which, coupled with his scintillating play, would make him a deadly opponent of the Australians. The United States held no terrors for the Australians. They were confident of the result.
THE AMERICAN TEAM. TESTS AT FOREST HILLS. (Beceived 5.6 p.m.) Reuter. NEW YORK. Aug. 8. Wm. Johnston defeated" Vincent Richards at Forest Hills, 6—3, 6—4, 3—6, 6—B, 9—-7. The committee which recently selected the American Davis Cup team (Tilden, Richards, Johnston and Williams) had deferred the selection of the second singles champion pending the result of this game. Tilden and Johnston will now play in the cup singles.
