THE VARNISHED STATUE.
ENGINEER'S EXPLANATION. NOT THE FIRST TIME. [BX TELEGRAPH.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Referring to tho varnishing of the Queen Victoria statue in the Kent Terrace reserve described by newspaper correspondents as "vandalism," tho city engineer, Mr. A. J. Paterson, states that a similar cleaning up was given tho statue prior to tho visit of the Prince of Wales. A complaint was made then that tho real beauty of the old bronze was taken away, but the mellowing returned fairly quickly. Tho difficulty of cleaning the statue, if it was really necessary to clean old (mellowed bronze, was that if acids were used it was certain that tho cleaning preparation would run down and destroy; the appearance of the stono base.
