THE COMPETITIONS.

BUSY DAY ON SATURDAY, MANY EVENTS DECIDED? A LARGER ATTENDANCE. Greater public interest was shown in tho festival of the Auckland Competitions Society 011 Saturday than on either of the two preceding days. In the concert chamber, where tho dancing sections were taken, tho attendance was good all day, 111 tho Town Hal! itself the attendance was fair during tho afternoon, but in the evening the large audience indicated that Auckland was beginning to tako more interest in the competitions. Classical and fancy dancing was judged by Miss Iris Montgomery during tho morning, and Mr. Robert Clark then judged tho Highland dancing. Mr. Culford Bell took the elocutionary section in the annexe. In tho afternoon the junior choir contests were judged by Mr. H. Temple White in tho Town Hall and tho piano championship was also taken. In tho evening the usual recalls and several other items wore decided in the Town Hall. The results, with the judges' comments, aro as follow : CHAMPIONSHIP PIANO SOLO. Open. Schado and Miss Martha Williamson 2 Both were bright renderings and there yras not much difference between tho two. JUNIOR CHOIR CONTEST. Bayfield District School t .M 1 Normal School .. .1.. t.<. 2 Tho winners were both very good choirs, tho first particularly having a very beautiful tone and good blend of expression. Both made very good attempts at threepart harmony. Tho work of all tho choirs was very creditable. SCHOOL CHOIR. Boys only. The judge said that only two gave what could be called classical dances, and awarded Mary Wilson and Geneo Rodger second place equal. CHARACTER DANCE. Under 11 years. Tho third had a very good sense of humour and would have been placed higher if she had attempted a more difficult dance. DANCE DUO. Open. In the Town Hall .concert chamber this morning the men's championship solos and the sacred solo contest for ladies will bo taken. The open puino duet and Welsh ball?.d, open, will also bo heard. In the afternoon there will bo children's violin and piano solos and the open sailor's hornpipe. The Irish ji? for children under 15 will also be taken then. In the annoxe children's recitations and impromptu readings will be heard during the afternoon. This evening's programme should be a decided attraction. Ir. addition to the usual recalls there will be brass quartettes, drawing room entertainments and humorous recitations. All the evening items will be taken in the Town Hall proper.
