TAURANGA COUNTY COUNCIL. A MEMBER DISQUALIFIED. QUESTION OF EXPENSES. [ur nsi'EGHAFii.—own correspondent.] TAURANGA. Saturday, A special mooting of the Tauranga County Council was held yesterday to consider and sottlo tho balance-sheet for the year ended March 31. The audit ofiico certified tho balance-sheet to be correct subject to the following tag 3 "1. The payment to Mr. C. Lally, per medium of S. Taylor, of tho sum of £6 5s for timber supplied to the council disqualifies Mr. Lally as a councillor in terms of section 62 of tho Counties Act and renders him liable to Clio penalties provided by section 63 of tho Act quoted. "2. The payment to councillors of travelling allowances in lieu of actual expenses contravenes tho terms of section 83 of tho Counties Act, 1920." Mr. C. Lally stated that, if necessary, he was prepared to defend his position. Tho council unanimously adopted tho following motion:—"That tho Government bo asked to fix a uniform scale of payment of reasonable travelling expenses and allowances to members of local bodies, thus remedying tho present unsatisfactory method of such payments and obviating tho Audit Department's irritating tags too frequently found on local bodies' balance-sheets." The council also requested tho chairman, Mr. R. King, to submit the resolution to a conference of county councils t<V bo hold at Hamilton on July 16.
