CHATHAM CUP SEMIFINALS. Y.M.C.A. AND HELLABY'S OUT. PONSONBY WIN THRILLING GAME. There was a large attendance at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon to witness the semi-finals of the local Chatham Cup competition, played under the jurisdiction of the Auckland Football Association. Notwithstanding that heavy showers fell throughout the afternoon some remarkably fine football was witnessed in the principal match of the day, when Hellaby's and Ponsonby provided a Stirling contest. From start to finish play proceeded at a rattling pace and spectacular incidents were frequent, with excitement among the onlookers kept at a high pitch. Both sides exerted every ounce and Ponsonby, who had gone down to their opponents in the previous Saturday's league match, snored a well-deserved and popular victory by the odd goal in three. In the curtain-raiser Y.M.C.A. were no match for the redoutable Thistle team, who won as they liked by the big margin of five goals. Thistle got their first point early, and for a time after that it looked as though Y.M.C.A. were going to make a game of it. In the second half, though, they were never in the picture, notwitbstanding that their opponents obviously slackened off. At Onehunga a senior competition match was played between North Shore and Tramways. A hard-fought game ended ill a one-goal victory for North Shore, details of the score are: — Ponsonby 2, Hellaby's 1. Thistle 6, Y.M.C.A. 1. North Shore 1, Tramways 0. THE CHECK TO lIELLABY'S. Ponsonby turned out at full strength and lost no time in getting into their stride. From o- throwm near halfway .. ceived from Mitchell and dasned down the right wins. Ivippy attacking work by Ponsonby continued, with Keeshani Veop:ng hie forwards well supplied with nail. Shots from Christie, lnnea and Kennedy rained in on Norman, who saved particularly well in the latter instance. Kane, of Hcl laby's, gave temporary lehef. At one moment Adshead, with O'Brien in support, was bearing down on the Hellaby's goal and at the nest Holmes had received from Martmdale to test Craxton at the other end. And so it continued, much to the aelignt of the onlookers, until Innes, who was working valiantly for Ponsonby, darted through to tho left of the goal. when in Hellaby's area. He stopped quickly and turned the ball to centre. Like a flash Chrietie was in between Kane and Whoweii, to head a magnificent goal from cloEe range. Ponsonby were one up. _ With every man working splendidly, the leaders continued to prese. The crowd vas on the tip-toe of excitement when a sharp onslaught drew Norman well out of goal and Adshead returned the ball to centre before the custodian could return to his charge. A shot from Kennedy sailed truly for goal and Whowell headed clear for Kane to remove the danger- with a hefty kick. Hellaby's then took a turn -at attack, bat j found the defence of and Pickett very solid, until Martindale mad® an open- j ing for Bryan. The right wing put in a | great run down the line, evaded Williams, and shot at express speed. Croxton stopped tAet hall, hut failed to clear smartly. Margisorh dashed in to slam it in to the back of the feet and equalised amid great excitemin\he closidj stages of tho spell the pace did not slacken Ifs scrap and some great football was witnessed- Hellaby's began to have their full shareVf the ball, but neither side could penetrate rv 3o defence, though both frequently went V , c ' os ? l . adding points. Pickett e'ventually cleared and 'lnnes started a counter-move that was checked in front of Hellaby's goal, when McLachlan got back just in the nick of time. Ponsonby's forwards had now warmed up to tho second effort and onco again a sweeping rush had Hellaby's hard at it defending. Billiant work by Christie and Ahcrn ended in a cross from Innes to Adshead, on the left. The wing man clipped round Whowell and sent in a grand shot from his left foot. Norman misjudged the ball, which landed just under the bar. putting Ponsonby in the lead. The remaining time was strenuously con tested and it wfuj obvious that the excitement spread to the men on tho field, although there was no unduly rough play. Several times Margison spoiled likely moves for Hellaby's by becoming too eager and getting offside. "Hands" against a Hellaby's defender gave Innes a chance with a penalty, but it was hard to shoot truly tn the deep mud and the ball went straight to Norman, who saved. Not for a moment did Hellaby's slacken their efforts to equalise, and during tne last 10 minutes they were continually on the offensive. At this stage O'Brien, Ponsonby's left-half, was continually prominent with effective spoiling work that was a treat to watch. A splendid game ended with tho scores: Ponsonby 2 Hellaby's .. .. % . .. 1 THISTLE'S EASY WIN. Shortly after the kick-off Thistle invaded the Y.M.C.A. area and Dodds sent in a stinging shot which A. Lucas saved in good style. But the Scots pressure continued and a corner was soon forced. The ball went back to Hamill who slipped it across to Duilsmoro. A great shot lrom tho outside right Sailed into the net and Thistle were ono up. Prompt retaliation by Y.M.C.A. saw their whole forward line working cleverly. They were often dangerous in play that followed, and Ferguson and .Ritchie had their work cut out to stem the attack. For a time it looked as though they would equalise, but the forwards lost chances through passing too far forward and the halves, with the exception of Shenkin. were not vory strong in support Thistle were missing no chances and ,it was not long* before 801 l secured at midfield and passed forward to Humphries. The Scots centre forward spurted through the Y.M.C.A. defence and finished off « dashing move with a successful shot while going at top speed. It wa3 a ereat goal. Thistlo, 2: Y.M.C.A., 0. The reverso did not quell Y.M.C.A.'s spirit and their forwards countered, smartly from the kick-off, Marshall went close to goal with a powerful drive and then De Ltlce was ruled offside when about to shoot from a good position. After shots from Dunsmore, Dodds and Hislop had gone within an ace of scoring, Marshall, of Y.M.C.A., got away again. Rain had commenced to fall and he slipped on the greasy turf after beating Ferguson. Jack cleared the shot, which lucked sting. Do Luce, of Y.M.C.A.. was soon back. Blocked by Ritchie he passed to Entwistle, who returned to centre. Do Luce sent in a sharp shot. Jack stopped the ball which fell at his feet, and Marshall charged in to score from closo up, reducing Thistle's lead. A snell of fairly ovon play ensued but soon Thistle began to assume the upper hand. Dodds was making splendid openings for Dunsmore and in one of their combined movements, Dick, of Y.M.C.A . T,tas forced to concede a corner. Dunsmore piloted the ball to the goal-mouth whero there was a livelv mix-up for a few moments. Eventually Humphries worked clear to score his second goal after A. Lucas Ijnd stopped some good phots. Fairly bright played marked the closiriK stages of the spell and at half-time Thistle were leading by 3 goals to 1. In the second half Thistle early began to dominate the situation and it was apnarent that t.liev wore not being extended. Twice tho Y.M.C.A. > forwards pot going but Ferttuson had no difficulty in sending them bsck. A spurt by Thistle saw one of the Y.M.C.A. fullbacks miss badly and Humphries was through to register his third goal, ' making Thistle's totn.l four. A few minutes from th« kick-off Williams got away oil Thistle's left to po right in and shoot. Lucas dived full length and turned it for a corner. From the flas-kick Humphries hetided another, making the Thistlo tally five. From then on Thistle did as they pleased, their superior team work outclassing their opponents in all rienartn)ents. As Humphries mode another dash for the Y.M.C.A. goal Larae came out and collided with Skipwith. Both fell to tho ground and Humphries went on in leisurely fashion to register his fifth goal unopposed. Before the end came Y.M.C.A., during a ra?d on Thistle's goal, wore awarded a penalty but the mud beat De Luo* and his "hot hit th» cronsbar and bounded over the top.
