MODERN BRITISH MUSIC.

LECTURE BY MISS LAW. A talk on modern British composers was given at tho open evening of tho musical circle at tho Lyceum Club by Miss Alico Law, L.R.A.M. Miss Law referred to the accomplished musicians that "England claimed in the time- of Elizabeth, and to the widespread knowledge of the musical art when all wero expected to take part in madrigals. She also spoke of tho now schools of music that at present wero doing wonderful work. Wo had formerly been content to get all our music from tho Continent, she said, but now this is changed, and [hero is a renaissance in British inusiCj which dates from 1900. but it is only recently that composers have gained recognition. Many British composers take great interest in folk music, and have done great work in collecting _ old tunes from country villages, especially Cecil Sharpe, Roger Quilter, Percy Grainger and others.- Miss Law gave a short, sketch of each composer whose works wero given. During tho evening the following programme was . given:— Violin and piano duet, sonata (two movements), by Elgar 5 songs, buent Moon," "Feast of Lanterns, Granville Bantock; sonata, Arnold Bax; ■_ Moto Porpetuo," by Frank Bridge; ul " Folk Song," by Eugene Gossens; Midnight Tido," Frank Bridge; Immottality," Cyril Scott; "Sea Fever, John Ireland; "Reverie" York Bowen; "Drink to Me' Only," Roger Quilter; "Admirals," Galliard Moffatt; Go, Lovely Rose,'! and "Morning Song, by Quilter; and "Children's Overtime, Quilter. Miss Constance Howard sang, Miss Margaret Stoddart took the violin solos, and Miss Alico Law and Miss Meredyth Adams accompanied.
