OWNER'S RACING FEES. HORSE THAT DID NOT WIN. YEAR SPENT IN THE BUSH. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WANGANUI, Tuesday, A man named Phillip Scown owned a horsa Tokomoana which in May last year ho entered for the Hack Steeplechase at tho Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting. Apparently ho was without money at the time and being unable to meet the entrance fees tendered a cheque for £lO. On the second day ho tendered another cheque" for £2O, receiving the balance in change. «The cheques were drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Hawera, and were subsequently dishonoured. Being aware that he had rendered himself liable to imprisonment Scown took to tho bush and there remained until four days' ago, when he was arrested. In a statement to the police Scown said he had banked on his "horse winning but his luck was out. He made up his mind to go to tho bush and by hard work and saving every penny evontually pay off his liabilities. The man appeared in Court on a charge of obtaining credit by fraud.. It was stated on his behalf that ho had overestimated the chance of his horse to win and had succumbed to temptation. When his horse failed and ho had a big liability to face he went into the bush and only once during tho year had he come out. That was to get a dog for-tho purpose of limiting pigs. During his period of bush lifo ho had earned other moneys in addition to 6d a snout for 300 wild pigs ho had killed. He now had sufficient money to make full restitution. Accused was admitted to probation.
