TOPICAL ILLUSTRATIONS. THE RACING AT ELLERSLIE. In the bright pictorial section of the Auckland Weekly News published today, prominence is given to the winter racing at Ellerslie.' A whole page is devoted to the principal event, the Great Northern Steeplechase, excellent .snapshots depicting all the interesting stages of the great race from start to finish. Sensational happenings of the week include the blow-out of gas at the Moturoa oil bore; startling subsidence ■in front of the meeting house at Whatarewarewa and floods in the King Country. South Africa's great welcome to the Prince of Wales is well illustrated by pictures which show the wonderful reception to His Royal Highness in Capetown and other sidelights of the tour. Progress of the Arapuni hydrd-elcctnc scheme, the huge undertaking which has created a new township on the Waikato River, is the subject of this week's centre double-page. There is great public interest in the scheme and the photographs are bound to attract wide attention. Interesting pictures too, are those showing the advancement of work on the East Coast Railway which will ultimately give connection between Auckland City and Tauranga. On the frontispiece is a very fine group photograph of the All Blacks now touring New South Wales. Among many further items of decided interest are the following-Five families living in tents and shacks at Point Chevalier; Japanese steamer sinking "with her crew of 38; hunting season in the South Island; first •chamois to be shot in New Zealand; hdvoc Wrought; by shags among the young trout, at Taupo; land-yacht racing, on the sands of Normandy;.serious motoring mishap near Kaikoura and New Zealanders honoured by the King.
