SCHOOL OF HOUSECRAFT.

A novel and decidedly interesting scheme of special interest, to mothers of girls in their "teens" is the' establishment of a school of housecraft at Hindhead, in Surrey. It is chiefly for girls who are leaving school, and the idea is to train them so that they will be capable of directing a staff of servants in the most efficient manner, or if necessary, of undertaking themselves tho various branches of household routine. The course is an extensive one, embracing all branches of cooking, housewifery, laundry wo/k, first aid and needlework. Arrangements are also made for those who wish to study music, painting, languages, typewriting or shorthand. Plenty yf time is given to out-of-door amusements, and some pupils take lessons in riding and motor-driving. Tho school fulfils a very real need of the future housewives and mothers of our country. Far too many young wives marry fresh from school, or after .a few years spent in an office, with practically no knowledge of how to run a house. If a girl decides to embark upon a career such as teaching or nursing she puts in some years of training aiyj study before she can consider herself proficient. Yet when it comes to the career that will occupy a great deal of her time for the rest of her life—that of home-management—a few odd lessons in cake-making, with possibly tho cooking of one or two dinners, arc considered sufficient training. This novel school of housecraft is" very welcome, and it is hoped it will prove a precedent for many more, not only in tho Old Country, but in the colonics also.
