Lady Pomarc is on a visit to Hamilton. Miss Aitken is visiting Mrs. Oswin in Hamilton. Miss W. Kent lias returned from a visit to Napier. Mrs,. H. F. Herbert,' of Christchurck, is on a .visit to Auckland. Mrs. Philip Hanna has taken up her residonco in Cotter Avenue, Remuera. Miss M. Allen, of Morrinsville, is staying with Mrs. W. B. Llbyd, Otahuhu. Miss B. Williams, of Masterton, is the guest'of Mrs. E. H. Vaile, Glade Hall, Epsom. Miss; Myra Firth and Mr. H. M Firth left Wellington by the Athcnic on an extended tour. Miss McFarlane, who has been on a visit to Auckland, has returned to her home in Hastings. Mrs. Eichclbaum, of Wellington, «is on a visit to Auckland, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Kane, president of the National Council of Women of New Zealand. who has been attending the International . Conference in Washington, has cabled that she has been invited to attend the National Council Conference in England. Miss Ivano intends to attend the conference, so that her absence from New Zealand will bo considerably longer than she anticipated. A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the Lyceum Club on Friday. Tho lounge was charmingly decorated with autumn foliago .and gold chrysanthemums, and there was a largo attendance of members and friends. Tho hostesses wero Miss Murray, vice-president, Mesdames Gilbert, Cecil and Novethiels, who had provided an excellent programme. Miss Ldna Craig sang charmingly: "At Sunsot," " Caro Mio Ben," " Across the Steppes." Miss Palethogpe gave much entertainment with two monologues: "A Charming Girl on Holiday," and " Husband and Wife." There was also a book guessing competition which was won by Mrs. Lovien, after which tea wab served in the lounge. , There was a very large attendance of friends and members of the various leagues at the annual social meeting of the Northcote Women's Progressive League, held in the Parish Hall, on Thursday afternoon. The president, Mrs. D. P. O'Leary, welcomed tho visitors, and the members were congratulated upon, tho result of the pergola fair, viz., £9O. An excellent programme was contributed, as follows: Pianoforte solo, Miss P. George; songs, Madame A. Hay ward. Misses Poore Warrall (2), D'Authreau, Peace, Hutchinson, Huttcr and Jones; violin solo, Madam© Martinengo recitation, Mrs. Minns. _ -he r ac ' companists wero Mrs. Millington, Mrs, Peace and Miss Poore. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to tho performers. Afternoon tea brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close. Apologies were received from Lady Gunson and Mrs. Baildon. The annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the Women Teachers Association, postponed on account of tho death of the late Prime Minister, was held last week at the Business ■ Women's Club Rooms, Customs Street. At the commencement of tho meeting the members stood in silence as a mark'of respect for the late Mr. Massey. Correspondence dealt with included a. letter of thanks from Mrs. Massey, _in reply to condolences from tho association. The meeting then proceeded to tho election of officers for tho ensuing year, which resulted as follows: President,, Miss Carnachan; secretary, Miss Flatt; treasurer, Miss Thompson (re-elected unopposed) ; vico-presidents, Misses Bayly and Newton; committee, Misses Anderson, Kennedy, Herbert, Ingram, Johnson and Murray. The remainder of the evening was devoted to social intercourse, musical items and a competition. There was a largo attendance at the Pitt Street schoolroom on the occasion of the annual 'gift afternoon for the Auckland Methodist Orphanages. Mrs. A. C. Caughey, president of the ladies' committee, was in the chair. In ah address the Rev. E. Drake stressed the care that should be taken of the children who were without homes or parents. Mrs. Armitage, matron of the Wesley Home; Mount Albert, made a striking appeal on behalf of tho children. A letter was read from one of tho orphanage "old girls," in which she thanked the board for her "four years at the Grammar School," and hoped she might be "privileged to pass on tho help so generously given" to her. Musical and elocutionary items were contributed bv Misses G. Hodge, Burke and Perry. Afternoon tea was served later. The collection was a record for-these gatherings, £42 being taken as well as numerous gifts of clothes. The monthly meeting of tho Girls' Query Club took place on Tuesday in the Business Girls' Club, Miss M. Jackson, the president was in the chair, and there were 30 members present. It was decided to hold the annual dance in June, and that part of tho proceeds of same be given this year to the Institute for the Blind, last year the club was able to Hand over the sum of £lB to the Mayoress' War Memorial Library Committee. The club is social and working, and when called upon to help any charitable object it rarely fetusis. This month the club helped on Poppy Day, and took a Stall to collect for the St. John Ambulance Societv's funds on Friday. To-morrow it is heloing at the sale of work to be held in the Town Hall in aid of St. Mary's Homes. Then, most important of all, it helps at the book room in tho Town Hall to send out parcels of books to lonoly settlers in the back-blocks, lighthouse keepers, sailors and children's hospitals, and asks the ladies of Auckland to send their old Home Journals to the book room, Town Hall, for the Query Club to use to make scrap books. Nurse Saunders Jones attended the meeting and gave an outline of the jvork done by tho St. John Ambulance Society. She then appealed to tho members to send into the office old linen and clean-washed rags; these latter, she said, were needed in great quantities.
