SATURDAY'S HOCKEY.

WESLEY'S GOOD SHOWING. A DRAW WITH SOMERVILLE. UNIVERSITY AND ARETA WIN. The championship matches played under tho auspices of the. Auckland Hockey Association were, continued at R emu era on Saturday afternoon. The playing areas were, soft us a result of recent, rains, and though pi ay was not first-class, the matches were all closely fought. The leadors in the competition, Somervilie, could only make a drawn game with Wesley, and indeed only just scored the equalising goal on time. Wesley played fine hockey. Areta gained their first win by defeating St. Luke's by 3 goals to 1. University beat Stanley by 3 goals to 2. WESLEY V. SOMERVILLE. Wesley showed up with promising piny in the early stages and Somervilie were hard Dressed to prevent a score. Roberts brought relief and H. Watts and Seccombe figured in clever play, taking the bull into the Wesley circle, where 11. \\ alls goaled from an acute angle, A movement by the Wesley front line, with Pitt, and Dickson prominent, was well stoped by Simpson, E. and C. Watts paved the way for Somervilie s second goal by breaking through in 'the centre. Clever stickwork and nice crosspassing gave Seccombe a chance and, Woolley missing badly, the ball rolled into the net. Wesley pressed for the remainder of the spell, but over-eagerness and illdirected shooting nullified good chances. Somervilie 2. Wesley 0. Several quick rushes by Wesley gave tliem the advantage, and though the Somervilie defence was sound, Fitt and Dickson eventually broke through and the latter player goaled. Somervilie iPut great dash in a long assault, C. Watts Scoring from close range. This reverse roused Wesley and a. series of hot attacks followed. The right wing, A. B. Burton, cleverly heat the backs .and Wiseman goaled from the centre. A furthef assault was successful, when Wiseman followed through and scored by flicking the ball past Cooper. Wesley 3, Somervilie 3. Wesley were now playing finely, the forwards' combination proving very effective. 'Hailwood and Fitt broke through and a cross pass to Dickson saw the last-named player score Wesley's fourth goal. _ . The closing stages were very exciting and Somervilie made strenuous efforts. Good work by the Watts brothers saw Wesley's goal endangered and, though several rushes were stemmed, E. Watts finally took the ball into the circle after a free hit and scored, making the^scores: Wesley 4, Somervilie 4. UNIVERSITY V. STANLEY. The early stages of the match were in favour of University, the forwards working well together, and making several fine movements. Good defensive play by Rankin and Saunders checked University momentarily, but the defence was drawn, and Clayton took the ball into the circle, where Seclen took an opening and goaled _ nicely. University were showing good tactics _ and the forwards v re quick to seize openings. Stanley were cornered and Burton scored, giving University a two-goal lead. In the resulting jilay Stanley's forward line broke through with nice passing. Veale checked, but Harvey and Chaplin went into the Circle and Chaplin scored. Several quick rushes by University gave them the advantage and Stanley's rearguard had a busy time on defence. Much give and take play followed till Harvey initiated a nice movement and Stanley penned University in their twenty-five. A good sideline run by Harvey drew the defence and from the centring hit Chaplin goaled and evened the sooros. Some fine movements by the University vanguard were instrumental in placing them in a good position. The forwards got into the circle and a back pass from Seelen to Burton enabled the latter to score. University 3, Stanley 2. Upon resuming, University were conspicuous in good combined rushes, but Stanley's defence was sound. Spectacular play by both sets of farwards was countered by both sets of backs. The scene of action changed quickly from end to end, and although University were much more dangerous than Stanley, the forwards' shooting was weak and many chances were lost. The game ended:—University, 3; Stanley, 2. ARETA V. ST. LUKE'S. St. Luke's pressed hotly and workod play into ' a good position, but over-eagerness spoiled matters and Davis cleared.- Hard hitting between Hayson a.nd Anthony put Areta on th© attack, till iM.ills brought relief with a speculator and St. Luke's vanguard gradually worked into the opposing twentyfive. Several scoring chances were lost, the forwards hitting much too hard. Ashley, .with a well-directed clearing hit, gave J. Carter a, chance, and the right wing took the ball well upfield and from his centre hit Hayson scored.- St. Luke's forwards showed considerable improvement and Areta were kept strictly on the defensive. Several shots followed but without result. Good play bv R. Ca,rter and Anthony saw Areta in a favourable position. A breach by a defender gained a corner hit and Hayson scored. St. Luke's made fitrenuous efforte to pierce the defence. A further •; attack was countered by Savage intercepting and passing to J. Carter, who, after a good run, sent across a beautiful centre. Hayson notched his third goal from a hot scramble. The resulting piay was in fa.vour of St. Luke's, A. Eight teani3 v/ill compete in the two hockey tournaments here on Wednesday next for the Kuaabs Shield (men), and the Aard Cup (ladies). The draw is as follows: Aard Cup.—Rotorua v. Tauranga, and Taneatua v. Te Puke. The winners of the two above games will draw to play Maketu in the final. Kusabs Shield'.—Whakatano v. Opotiki; Tauranga has a bye. LADIES* .HOCKEY. TWO CLOSE CONTESTS. The. matches under the Ladies' Hockey Association were, continued on Saturday. Training College A and St., Cuthbert's played a drawn game, and University beat Arawa. » In tho former match Training College were the first away but Miss Steele's shot was blocked, and St. Cuthbert's replied with an attack along the left, a good chance being lost. Training College cleared and tho forwards took play to the circle and Miss Mead scored. From the bully Training Collego again attacked and good work among the forwards ended in Miss Lemon scoring, making Training College two up;. Lack of finish lost St. Cuthbert's a scoring chance, but a little later Miss J. Dodds scored with a good shot. Training College were one goal ahead at half time. On resuming clever work by the Training College forwards resulted in Miss Steele again scoring. St. Cuthbert's half-line _ was very weak, the opposing forwards picking the ball up easily. One or two of the St. Cuthbert's players also showed a tendency to get out of position. A chance came to Miss A. Dodds, who scored. The.Training College forwards were not showing their former dash at this stage and St. Cuthbert's pressed, strongly. Miss Dodds again scoring. The game ended-. Training College A, 3; St. Cuthbert's, 3. UNIVERSITY DEFEAT ARAWA. Although the hockey in this game was not up to the standard of the other match there wes clever play at times. Early in the game Miss Pidgeon made a good run for Arawa but was well stopped at the twentyfive. The ball came back to Miss McLean, who made a solo run and beat tho goalkeeper with a hot shot. Miss Thomas. Arawa's left wing, was giving the University backs a lot of trouble and finally equalised the scores. Play returned to University's circle, where much scrambling and poking went on, and a shot just missed the goal. The University forwards, however, carried play to tho other end of the field and Miss Braithwaite found the net. Play continued at a fast pace and the Arawa forwards, combining well, rushed to the opponents' circle, Miss Hutchings scoring nicely. With tho scores equalised exciting play followed.
