LAST SAD TRIBUTES.
LATE . EARL OF YPRES. GRATEFUL FRENCH EULOGIES. TYPIFIED GENEROUS ENGLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Roceivcd G. 5 p.m.) A. and N,Z.—Times. LONDON, May 26. The last tributes to tho lato Earl of Ypres began impressively yesterday. After tho cremation of the remains at Golders Green, tho ashes wero conveyed to tho Wellington Barracks, where they lay in state. The public were admitted until 9 p.m. A long queue was formed, comprising all classes of tho community. Thoso present included tho "old cohtemptibles," business men, workmen, women and children. Insido tho chapel four guardsmen with arms reversed stood motionless at each corner of tho bier. Field-Marshal Joffro arrived from Paris at Victoria Station to attend tho service at Westminster Abbey. He was accompanied by 25 poilus in their familiar greyblue uniform and steel helmets. The' French soldiers will march in today's funeral procession. A message from Paris says iho French newspapers contain sympathetic references to the lato Earl. " One of the most noble figures in the war," is how Le Temps describes him. It adds: " France will never forget the loyalty and vigour with which ho co-operated with her loaders. It was deeds such as his—performed while the destinies of tho world wero at stake—that created tho powerful ties between Franco and Britain which nothing can weaken." Journal des Debats says; "Tho services which the Earl of Ypres rendered cannot bo measured by the numbers whom he commanded. Posterity will regard him as the incarnation of generous England, who rose as ono man to defend a 'scrap of paper,' to protect Belgium and to help France, who mourns him as one of her own children."
