NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS.

BY ARCHER.

W. Townsend returned to Ellcralio lass week with Barometer and Quincoma, anil will remain at headquarters until alter the Franklin raoolins?. Both of his charges look bright and well, especially Barometer. E. Stanway will rido Passionate and Golden Glint at tho Waipa meeting. where Passionate is expected to make his hrst appearance as a hurdler. C. Coleman will bo represented at Waipa by Indemnity, who is ensaged in both steeplochaso events. "indemnity has done a good preparation, and may make a lair showing anions tho poor crowd ho has to meet in tho Hack Steeplechase. 11. Hastedt will be in tho saddle. Master Peter should bo benefited by hia racing at Wnnganui, where ho notched two seconds. However, his finishing efforts diu not impress the critics. Thoso competent to iudgo give Savoury ft good chanco in tho Great Northern Hurdles. At his last start ho won tho Tongahoe Hurdles at Hawern, arul lie is regarded as being belter than ever lio has been. Remembering his easy victory in the Penrose Hurdle Race last year, it seems certain that ho will not bo bothered by going or tho bigger hurdles at merslie. *)"hoso who saw Dubious win tho Century Hurdles consider staying to be his torte, and it is a very valuable attribute in a race like the Great, Northern Fturdies. Evidently Dubious is a. young hurdler brimful of possibilities, and his work before tin meet ins -will bo keenly watched. Onuihu is reported to have, stripped in splendid condition at \Vanganui I his lino jumper had been unlucky at Eller-she, hut thero is reatson to behove he will make a bold hid for honours in the Great .Northern Steeplechase. L. Man son will bo on Quiusilia. and lha~ potoa at. Waipa. and Gold Rain. Gay Comet, and General Prydo at Ellerslie. _ As u result of *tr/nriea received when. Peter A/tmns fell if Autumn ateoptechase. lif. Warner ha - since been out of inn saddle, but resumed riding work at tho beginning of tho week. Warner has been engaged to rido Peter A mans in tho Great Northerns. At Kllendio on Saturday inornmg Pittsworth iT. Chaplin), Vociferate (\\. Puncheon). Long Rein (B. Barrow), and Manmhera (1). McMullan) sct oul t" do a round of the steeplechase. ."he wo first named completed their task tn good ptjle, but Long Rain stopped nX the second fence n the hill, while Manfahera fell on tho flat at the foot of the hill. Long Rein and Maniahera subsequently completed tho circuit.. R McTavish received a heavy fal when schooling Young Thurrnham at. E lersLe yesterday morning and sustained a. fr, tured collarbone. After being at tended by Dr Grant ho was removed to hospital, lnt accident was particularly unfortunate for McTavish ns be h«ui niuuo utiuinbcx of riding engagements for the Waipa and Auckland meetings. Sir Roscberry continues to please the track-watchors and hliouUl strip a very lit hoi so next week. His recent schoolirn: tasks both over hurdles and over tho steeplochaso fences have been a treat to watch. Owing to being none too sound Mary Bruce has probably not done the amount of work her trainer would have wished, though alio has been a regular worker. She appeared tired at the conclusion of her schooling gallop yesterday and it. is doubtful whether sho will bo at her best next week. A. number of horses left Ellerslie yesterday to compete at the aipa Meeting anion's them being Musketoon. Drawbridge, Pittsworth, To Tain. Explorer, Miss llosa. Tinokalia and Smoke. Panaahe proved of little account on. tho flat and after his failure at Whangarei 1. Georgo decided to give htm a course of schooling. The Panmure geldmg has made good progress with his jumping and he may bo a better proposition at this branch of the spoi'.t. Nothing really strenuous ins been exacted from Glenotus during the past week though he was noticed doing sound work on the grass yesterday. Glenotus has exhibited syniptons of soreness and naa been causing hia trainer some anxiety. Cornwall Handicap candidates in Musketoon, Bright Day, Whetunui, Cherry liipe. Zircon, Infante and Black Cruiser are engaged in the Woodstock Stakes at Te Aw amutu to-day. Their running will bo watched with interest in view of their more important engagement at Ellerslie next week. The race White Comet had at To Rapa in April was his first' this season and ho ran well while his condition lasted. It is reasonable to anticipate that he will strip in better condition at To Awamutu. and may make a good showing in the Welter Handicap. Quite a few new aspirants to jumping honours are expected to have their first outing over fences in tho Ngaroto Hurdles at To Awamutu. among them being Passionate, Some Fashion, Peter Rosa and Bir El Abd. With the exception of Passionate they are all trained in tho country and little is known concerning their jumping ability. Passionate has shown somo aptitude but hia schooling has been limited. If Mr. R. Hannon's jumpers King Abbey and Snake strip well at To Awamutu to-day they may be in demand with backers in their engagements. Snake ran his best raco this season at his last start and is possibly regaining his form. King Abbey made a bold showing in ' the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie and a reproduction of that effort would make him dangerous, more especially as ho will bo racing over flat country. Doleful Ditty is a horse that has been freely discussed in connection with the Cornwall Handicap. If ho has a chance in the big handicap at Ellerslie he should run prominently in the Welter Handicap at To Awamutu to-day.
