ONEHUNGA ROADING.

THE COUNCIL'S POSITION

QUESTION OF FURTHER LOANS. SPECIAL REPORT SUGGESTED. Tho Onehunga Borough Council met last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. J. E. Cowell, presiding. There wero also present Messrs. W. N. Mcintosh, W. C. Coklicutt, T. G. .11. Gilbert, 11. A. Stoupe, J. E. Green, R. G. Speight, W. Kemp, 11. Campling and A. J. llipwell. An echo was heard of the statement "made during the' recent municipal election campaign, that it had been found the loan of £75,000 was not sufficient to complete the works scheduled. A recommendation from tho. conncil-in-committee was fully, discussed, and it was decided that in the, meantime loan work be confined to footpaths, and that tho Streets Committee should submit a list of paths requiring most urgent attention. The chairman of the committee, Mr. ,Gilbert, said tho balance of tho loan money in hand, £34,000, was more than enough to make, all the footpaths, but that after tho winter it would bo necessary to undertake further road works. Councillors were of opinion that authority would have to be obtained from the ratepayers for raising a further loan to complete the rest of the roads. At a later stage, Mr. W. N. Mcintosh gave notico of bis intention to move at tho next meeting:—That a meeting of ratepayers bo called by tho Mayor as soon as possible, for tho purpose of laying beforo them tho financial position in connection with tho reconstruction of tho roads and footpaths, and obtain from them an opinion with regard to raising a further loan to completo the work in accordance with the scheino decided upon and begun by tho old council. That tho correct estimate jef tho extra amount required bo obtained from a consulting civil engineer, with tho assistance of tho borough foreman, and submitted to tho meeting.

Support was given to a suggestion from the Runanga Borough Council, that tho Government bo recommended to provide pensions for the victims of infantile paralysis. Tho Taupo water committee furnished further details of the proposed scheme for obtaining water from Lake Taupo, and advised that another conference would bo held shortly. A reply was received from the Post-master-General, declining to accedo to the council's request that the telegraph office bo opened each evening from 7 to 8, the reason being that tho business offering when "the office was formerly open at this hour did not warrant the extension. It was decided to renew the request, and to seek tho co-operation of the Manukau Chamber of Commerce and tho member for tho district, Mr. W. J. Jordan. , The Royal Oak School Committee drew attention to the danger to tho children caused by cattle being driven past tho school, and urging that the by-law be enforced. The Mayor said tho by-law required drivers to obtain a permit, and the amimittee will be informed that one prosecution had taken place and another was pending, tho council endeavouring to secure duo observance of the by-law.

The Jellicoe Park Citizens' Committee advised that tho swings and other apparatus formerly in the park had now been erected in the reserve in Church Street West, and it was decided to accept tho samo with thanks. A recommendation of tho Streets Committee was adopted which will provide for Sin.-of metal in Upper Queen Street, instead of 6in. as originally specified.
