SEATS ON THE COUNCIL.

Nominations for the election of Mayor and councillors for tho City of Auckland will cjoso next Monday at the Town Hall, but a few nominations havo already been received. Among those lodged yes terday was that of Mr. Harold Doros Schmidt for tho mayoralty, the only one so far handed in for that office, although Mr. Georgo Baildon, the present Demit yMayor, is to be a candidate. A contest is thereforo assured.

Thare aro 21 scats on tho council to be filled, and it is certain tho majority of the sitting members will seek re-ciection Only two nominations had been received yesterday, theso being lodged ou bohalt of Mr'. J. A. C. Allum, a member of tho present council, and Mr. Alexander Aber cromby Troup, of Remuera.

HARBOUR BOARD SEATS. SIX MEMBERS RETURNED. THE CITY NOMINATIONS. Six of tho fifteen members of the Auckland Harbour Board havo been returned unopposed and three hold their seats for another year.

The, members returned arc: Mr. 11. R. Mackenzie, chairman of :!io board, who represents tho combined 'istriet of Manuiau and Franklin; Mr. ±»1. 11. Wynyar.l, deputy-chairman, representing the district comprising tho two boroughs of Newmarket and Onehunga, tho Eilersho town

district and the Mount Wellington, Tamaki West, Ono Tree liill, Panmure and Orakei road districts; Mr. T. B. Clay, representing the boroughs of Mount Eden and Mount Albert; Messrs. C. G. Macindoo and W. F. McCallum, representing the payers of dues on ships; Mr. E. J. C'arr, representing the payors of dues other- than dues on ships. Messr;. J. B. Teasdale and A. M. Laing were elected by their counties for a term of three years and will consequently not retire until May of next year. Tho Government nomineo ori the board, tho Hon. E. W. Alison, was appointed for a similar term.

Mr. G. Parr, the Waikato representative on tho board, who failed to lodge his nomination at Hamilton on Tuesday, will in all probability be appointed by the Governor-General under the powers conferred by tho Harbours Act. Nominations for tho four Auckland Oitv seat;; on tho board will close at noon on 'Monday. So far only Mr. E. W. Incler. ono of tho sitting members, and Mr. J. B. Johnston, chairman of tho Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association, have been nominated. The other retiring City members aro Messrs. W. Wallace and T. Bloodworth. Mr. Wallaco is not seeking re-election, as ho intends to dovoto his timo to the affairs of tho Auckland Hospital Board, of which ho is cnairman. , , The Labour Party has announced th?' it intends to nominate Mr. Bloodworth and Mr. 0. Mcßrine, president of the Waterside Workers' Union. For tho futuro, the City will have four members on the board, its representation haying been increased to that number from threo last year. . Tho remaining scat is that allotted to tho combined district of the boroughs of Devonport, Takapuna, Birkenhead and Northcote, Mr. J. Henderson, tho sitting member, and Mr. A. E. Greenslade have been nominated and will go to tho poll 11 on April 29.

BIRKENHEAD MAYORALTY. MR. WALTON WITHDRAWS. Tho Mavor of lirkenhead, Mr. E. 0. Walton, announced at a meeting of the council last evening that ho bad reversed previous decision and would not be a candidate for tho Mayoralty at tho forthcoming elections. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. E G. Skeates, was unanimously asked, and consented, to stand for the Mayoralty. PEOSPECTS AT PUKEKOHE. RATEPAYERS APATHETIC. [by telegraph.—OWN correspondent. 1 PUKEKOHE. Wednesday. Very little interest is being taken so far in the approaching Borough Council elections, and no nominations for the positions of Mayor and members of the council have yet been received by the returning officer. It is understood that flic prescut Mayor, Mr. John Routlv will again consent to bo nominated for re-election. Mi - . K. Lawrie, an ex-Mayor, is also contesting tho Mayoralty, while it is very likely that Mr. John Patterson, who was a candidate at the last election, will offer himself for tho position at tho coming contest.

POSITION IN HAMILTON. KEEN INTEREST AROUSED. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] HAMILTON Wednesday Keen interest is being taken by Hamilton ratepayers in tho approaching Borough Council election. Recent meetings of the Borough Council have been marked by stormy discussions arising out of a report submitted by an investigation committee which inquired into the administration of the council's business. The action taken by the council in regard to this matter is likely to be a deciding factor in the elections. Many changes in the personnel of the council arc forecasted. While it is likely that most, of ihc present members will stand again, several "tickets" will, it is understood, be nominated. Mr. A. E. Webb, a member of tho present council, is opposing Mr. J. R. Fow, tho present Mayor, for tho Mayoralty. Messrs. F. A. Sncll, J. F,. Tidd, C. Lambeth, T. McGloiri, F. W. Luxford and several members of the Frank ton Ratepayers' Association are among thoso mentioned as candidates for the council.
