DEATH OF MR. E. HAYNES. Sun. NEW YORK, Apl. 14. The death lias occurred of Mr. El wood Haynes, inventor of the motor-car. The late Mr. El wood Haynes was born at Portland, Indiana, in 1857. Ho was originally a teacher of sciences at the Eastern Indiana normal school. Later he was manager of two gas and oil companies. and in 1898 lie became president of the Haynes Automobile < '<>. Mr. Haynes discovered tungsten chrome steel in 1881 and later various alloys. It was in 189,594 that he designed and constiiu-ied the lirsl motor-ear, or "horseless carriage," as it was called. This vehicle is still on exhibition at tlie Smithsonian Institution in New York. The inventor was the first (o introduce aluminium in automobile engines. He also invented and built u. rotary valve gas engine.
