THE SOUTHERN ALPS.

WAIMAKARIRI'S SOURCE. SCENIC BEAUTIES PRAISED. [by telegraph.-—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The party which has just visited that region among the Southern Alps where tho Waimakariri River has its source speaks highly of the beauties of the area. "I am more convinced than ever that the place is worthy of development as a scenic resort," said Mr. N,. Carrington, leader of the party. "Of course it is not contended that the glaciers constitute the chief attraction, neither do I say that the place is an ideal spot for serious game-liunters or climbers. It is more for tho amateur from town, who would like to spend a week-end in the back blocks. The main attraction lies in the scenery consisting of beautiful waterfalls and steep mountain sides. The glaciers may bo small, but nevertheless they present climbing worthy of the attention of skilled climbers. There are mountains there also that are very easily climbed, and from them can be gained tho most wonderful of views."

Members of the expedition unanimously agreed that the scenic beauties of the region constituted the principal attraction, and it was decided to stress this fact in an official report to the Canterbury Progress League. It was also decided by the expedition to make a recommendation to the league to ask the Government to take steps to have a hut erected there to accommodate 20 persons.
