NATIVE BUSH ON THE RANGES.
Sir, —It is difficult to understand why the people living in tho neighbourhood have not been encouraged in their efforts to preserve the native bush on tho ranges —ono of the wonders and attractions of Auckland. Citizens do not seem to realise the asset they have in this beautiful district of winding, bush-sheltered roads, with views of the harbour, so close to the heart of a big city, so close that in another year or two it will be part of the city. Every year the danger of destruction is increasing. Dunedin is deservedly proud of the foresight of its early citizens in preserving the Queen's Drive. This has not half the wealth of foliage of tree and plant that is to bo found on the rppds of our ranges. If a strenuous effort is not made to preserve the beautiful bush on the ranges it will soon be too late. Some supervision of the crowds of people who go holidaymaking there is needed, for though some are careful and thoughtful for the safety of the bush, many others aro qnito thoughtless and careless of its preservation. Late Dunedinitb.
