FIRE STATION SITE.
POSITION AT DEVONPORT. THE CONTRACT DELAYED. A deputation comprising members and honorary members of the Devonport 1' ire Brigade waited on the Borough Council last evening urging the retention of the present fire station site and the signing of the contract for the building, in order that the work might proceed. The matter of the site and building lias been the subject of considerable discussion for several months. Although the site has been definitely decided upon, a position has arisen whereby the money available is not sufficient to cover tho cost of the proposed building without committing the incoming council to extra expenditure. Although this had been done at a previous meeting, consideration was not given tithe fact, that tho present council had no jurisdiction over the expenditure authorised.
A notice of motion was accordingly sub rnitted by the Mayor to rescind the previous resolution, and after much discussion it was resolved, on the casting vote of tho Mayor, that the signing of the contract be deferred for three weeks.
