VICTORIAN FARMERS.
OPENING OF CONFERENCE. POLITICAL PACT QUESTION. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Itecd. 1.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE. Mar. 10. The Victorian Farmers' Lnion confeience opened to-day. The president stated that one thing which the union had set out as an organisation to do was to explode the longaccepted idea that the farming community existed chiefly to enable other industries to expand and flourish, regardless of the national welfare. The intentions of a previous Government in endeavouring to establish the secondary industries were highly creditable, but they could not evade the fact thai the result was a pauperised peasantry. The conference is debating a motion to the effect that the union absolutely opposes any pact being made, in any shape, with any political party. Federal Ministers arc concerned as to the outcome of this motion, as the fate of the Federal Government depends on the acceptance or rejection of a pact, llicv arc seeking to delay a decision until moie delegates arrive from the country.
