THE AMERICANS' VISIT. CROWD MUCH EXCITED. [by telegraph.— press association.] CHJRISTCHURCH. Monday. The huge crowd which' packed the English Park stadium on Saturday evening to witness the professional cycling events became exceptionally noisy at times. 111 the mile race, while rounding a bend, O'Shea went sprawling on his back, and Spencer, the American, rode on up the straight to the winning post, amid terrific hooting. O'Shea had to- go to the outpatients' department of the hospital. An inquiry was held, and it was announced that the fall was purely an accident. Then came the three-mile scratch race. Spencer again led going along the back for the last, time. Leatham challenged. and just as he was drawing level he suddenly swerved up to the top of the bank. "This wan the signal for another outburst of hooting. A great many spectators, however, did recognise the merit of Spencer's win. and applauded heartily. Subsequently the officials lined Spencer £1 for looking round, and CI for riot I keeping within the while line at the ! bend for home. Another rider Mnckie, ! was fined XI for trying to get, up on the S inside when there was no room. The proceedings closed with the arena a mass of jabbering humanity, arguing about what had occurred. Results: - Three-mile Scratch Lace. -Spencer, I ; Carey, 2: Sow den. 3. Time. 6m. 255. Match Race, of CI00: first distance, quarter-mile, 11 ripaced. -- O'Shea beat Spencer by inches. Second distance, one mile, pacctl: Spencer won. O'Shea falling. Further events are to he raced on Wednesday. SPENCER MAKES NO CLAIM. WILL MLET O'SIILA AGAIN. I'liY IKI.EOUAI'H. Spencer announces that lie does not claim the mile race in which O'Shea fell, He stales thai a man has to finish, otherwise the race is no good to him. Saturday's match cannot be completed, as O'Shea will not be able to ride on Wednesdav. The men will meet in anothei race on March M, at, Wellington.
