QUESTION OF RATING POWERS AN AMENDMENT SOUGHT. [by TELEGRAPH. —OWN COIIRESrONDBN r.] TE AKOHA. Monday. The YVaitoa Drainage Board met on Saturday. Mr. F. W. Walters presiding. The magistrate's decision in the case against Lowry, of Morrinsviilc. for disputed rates, was placed before the Board. In view of the magistrate's remarks, it was thought that some steps should be taken to tiring before the Crown Law office the desirability of having the Act amended so that there would be no possibility of misconstruction with regard to the board's rating powers. It was decided to bring the matter before the board's solicitor. A letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs consenting to the proposal that the election shall lie held on March 11. The chairman stated that the rale notices had been sent out lata, and as little money bad come in the work of cleaning drains was being delayed, and would be delayed until the rates were paid. It was left, with the engineer and members of wards to have work done as money became available. The engineer was asked to write to the Public Works Department for further information with regard to the canal from the Wakahoro to the Waitoa River. The engineer reported on the inspection made with a view to determining the area that would benefit by the proposed loan of £2500 for dredging the Waitoa Uivcr to the Ohino Creek. It was stated that if a loan was not sanctioned the dredging by the Public Works Depaitmenf would cease at the Paeioa-Tahuna road. It was decided to call a meeting of the settlors interested.
