GARAGE IN FLAMES.

MAN SEVERELY BURNED. PROMPTLY RESCUES A CHILDDRIVER'S NARROW ESCAPE. [by telegraph.---own correspondent.] WANG A NUT. Saturday. The Wanganui fire brigade demonstrated its efficiency last evening when its promptness saved a conflagration and perhaps loss of life. The outbreak occurred at Martin and Vernon's garage. Mr. Martin was putting petrol into a car when a flare arose all round him, and his clothes caught fire. A passer-by immediately gave the aiarm and the brigade was on the scene in a few seconds. Assistance was rendered to Mr. Martin, who was severely burned about the' 1 hands and arms. The rafters in the roof wero already ablaze, but a hoso was quickly run out and the fire was suppressed. The smoke had ascended, pene t.rating the rooms on the first floor, in one of which a driver lav asleep. In another room was the eight-year-old daughter of Mrs. Vernon. Attention was directed to the child's predicament, and despite his burns Mr. Martin dashed upstairs and rescued the girl, no easy task in the dense smoke and flames. The driver had a rude awakening. Clad in his pyjamas he effected an exit through a window. His hair and eye* brows were singed, but otherwise he was little the worse for his experience. The damage to the building is covered by insurance.
